Dioptase - Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Oshikoto Region, Namibia
Dioptase from Tsumeb is one of our Top 100 Minerals for collectors.
Dioptase is probably the most desired mineral from Tsumeb, possibly second only to azurite. The mine has produced some extraordinary examples, considered to be the world’s best. The deep green crystals are most commonly associated with and very aesthetically contrasted against white calcite. Other associated minerals include cerussite, malachite, wulfenite and the rare molybdofornacite.
Likely because of the strong association of dioptase with the Tsumeb mine, some collectors and writers assume that the Tsumeb mine is the type locality for the species. It is not, that honor belongs to the Altyn Tyube deposit in southern Kazakhstan.
