This material is predominantly labeled as coming from the Daoping mine when in fact the deposit is in a mountain that straddles two counties and is being worked from one side via the Daoping mine (Gongcheng county) and the other via the Yangshuo mine (Yangshuo county). The earliest pieces that came on the market in 1999 were mined in the Yangshuo mine. During 2000 some of the finest material was collected in the Daoping mine, but both mines produced specimens. It is quite difficult to say where specimens actually came from and the mines are now even connected underground. The pyromorphite occurs as bright lime-green spindle like crystals to more stout hoppered hexagonal crystals. However, the pyromorphite from Yangshuo is apparently lighter and more yellowish in color, whereas the Daoping material is in general darker, more intense green.
Not much has been collected since 2000 but both mines continue to operate, leaving hope for further finds. In the meantime, the material that was collected at the time is disappearing quickly from dealers’ shelves.
